Making Custom Packaging for a Small Business

Want to add some pizazz to your packaging while keeping it budget friendly? Here’s a quick guide on how I create custom packaging for mailing out orders without breaking the bank.

Making Custom Packaging for a Small Business

  1. Setup: In a document editing software (in this video I use, Microsoft Word), you’ll want to setup the document specs so that they match your envelope’s dimensions.

    • Page Layout: You’ll want to set this spec to match the size of your envelope. I’m my example I use a 5×7 envelope, so I set my page layout to 5×7.

    • Page Orientation: I set the orientation to landscape to make it easier for you to make a horizontal design to match the direction of the envelope.

    • Margin: I set a custom margin of 0.12 in, the smallest margin allowed on my document.

  2. Design: Add your design to the page. You’ll want to take into account the page margins if you don’t want your design to be cut off.

    • You can upload a design you already made or upload several pieces of your art to make a new design exclusively for your packaging.

  3. Print: Print your design according to your printer’s specifications

    • You’ll want to take note of any directions provided on how you need to feed your envelopes so that your design prints as expected.

I hope this guide helps you to think about how you might add a little more of your brand to your packaging, and create a memorable experience for your customer without having to spend a lot of money.💸
